The Tempe Historical Museum was founded by the Tempe Historical Society, which opened a 4,800-square foot exhibit hall in the east wing of the Tempe Public Library building in 1972. In 1984, the Museum became a division of the City of Tempe's Community Services Department. In the following year, a bond issue was approved, and work began on converting the entire 36,000-square foot library building into a new museum. The new Tempe Historical Museum, with an 8,000-square foot exhibit gallery, opened to the public on June 15, 1991. The Museum also operates the Petersen House Museum, a restored Queen Anne Victorian house that is used to interpret daily life in Tempe around the turn of the century.The vision of the Museum is, "The Tempe Historical Museum is a center where the community comes together to celebrate Tempe's past and ponder the future." Permanent and changing exhibits, educational programs, and research projects generally focus on some aspect of Tempe's history within the context of state and national events. The Museum currently has seven full-time staff members, and more than a hundred regular volunteers contribute a considerable amount of staff support in all areas of the Museum's operation.

The first available written record of the Tempe Free Reading Room and Library Association is contained in the minutes of a regular session held on July 11, 1908; the president, Mrs. Windes, in the chair. In the absence of the secretary, Mrs. Flora Finch was appointed secretary pro tem. Mrs. Franklin was the librarian, at a salary of $5 per month.At this meeting, it was impossible to read the minutes of the previous meeting, because a fire at the Southern Methodist Episcopal parsonage, on West Eighth Street at Mill Avenue, had destroyed the secretary's book. It was moved by Mrs. Finch and seconded by Mrs. Stewart that the Secretary purchase a secretary book; It was also decided that another meeting be held the following Saturday to draft a constitution and bylaws to govern the Association. This meeting was held on July 18, 1908; the constitution and bylaws were read and adopted after one bylaw was amended. Also, the Reverend Mr. Check resigned his position as secretary, and Mrs. I.V. Stewart was elected to fill the vacancy.

The Tombstone Boarding House consists of two 1880 adobe houses surrounded by an 1880 style picket fence. The first house is know as the Blackburn house. In a 19th Century Photo, the south wall of the building was covered by the Tombstone Rose. The home was remodeled and enlarged in the early 1930's.The second house was the original Barrows house where, according to legend, in the 1880's the notorious Buckskin Frank Leslie roomed. While proving to his wife that he could shoot drunk or sober, he shot her silhouette in the wall which was later plastered over.
