Boreal Partners in Flight is a coalition of individuals who are working together to help
conserve bird populations throughout boreal regions of North America. Boreal Partners in
Flight is the official Alaska state working group of the international Partners in Flight
program. We also have many members from Canada because we share many of the same species,
habitats, and problems. The international program was started in 1990 because of concerns
about continental declines in populations of many landbird species. Initially the program
focused on species that breed in North America and winter in the Neotropics (Central and
South America) but it now addresses all North American landbirds and other species that
use terrestrial habitats, such as shorebirds, owls and grouse.Boreal Partners in Flight
has over 100 members, including representatives from all the major federal land and
resource managers in Alaska and Canada, state and provincial agencies, universities,
Alaska Native corporations, and local environmental consulting firms. Nongovernmental
organizations such as the Alaska Bird Observatory, Alaska Natural Heritage Program, and
local chapters of the National Audubon Society play key roles. The foundation of the
program, however, relies on the commitment of individuals. Boreal Partners in Flight
includes biologists, land managers, teachers, and birders--a diverse, active, and
dedicated group.

Black Diamond Golf
City: Healy
Tel: +1 907 683 4653
Black Diamond Golf Course takes its' name from the historic Diamond Strip Mine. The
Diamond Mine was developed in 1943 as part of the war minerals program of the US
government and was instrumental in easing the coal shortages resulting from World War II.
The coal lies in a formation known as the Nenana coal bed, a foot hill belt boarded in the
south by the high rugged masses of the Alaska Range and to the north by the broad flats of
the Tanana Valley. The coal was hauled by truck five miles down a gravel road to the small
railroad town of Healy (established as a mining camp in about 1905) where the railway
transported it to Fairbanks for use by the US Army. Although no longer active, and
partially reclaimed by the forces of nature, the Diamond Mine and its' effect on the
history of this area is still visible for all to see!

Hallo Bay Bear Camp
City: Homer
Tel: +1 907 235 2237
Hallo Bay Wilderness is designed to be a wildlife and wilderness experience a true Alaska
wilderness experience. which offers a limited number of people the opportunity to walk
amongst the giant brown bears. No one leaves without the feeling of a true wilderness
experience and lives are touched by the memories made here.Established in 1994, Hallo Bay
was designed to be a trend setting model of responsibility and low impact to this
environment. Our guests observe the bears in their natural habitat. There are no viewing
platforms or man-made trails at Hallo Bay. The total number of guests at Hallo Bay on any
given day is 8-10 and they are further divided into two sub groups of usually 4-5 people
per group with each sub group having its own guide. It is our experience that 5 people (4
guests-1 guide) are much less impacting than large groups of people on any wilderness
outing. The smaller group size intimidates wildlifeless and leaves a much less impacting
footprint on the local habitat. The bear observation out in the field is conducted under
the direction of our professional guides whose primary duties include the safety of our
guests and the continued preservation of this unique area and its magnificent wildlife.
Along with our guides, the camp personnel play a very important role in preserving this
wilderness area. Unlike other operations which utilize bear traumatizing high voltage
electric fences, rubber bullets and mace type sprays to discourage bears, Hallo Bay denies
bears the opportunity to learn bad habits, but does not discourage their natural curiosity
of their surroundings. Thus it iscommon to see bears in the camp, but in ten years of
operation we have never had a bear cause damage. Hallo Bay personnel utilize the
experience and the vast knowledge gained by many years along with lots of common sense to
co-exist with these bears in a peaceful and serene environment. While Hallo Bay personnel
do everything reasonably possible to maintain and protect this pristine wilderness area,
we also need the understanding and cooperation of our guests in order to do it in a manner
beneficial to the habitat and wildlife it contains.

For many years, knowledge of bird migration in the Near Islands was only fragmentary,
since they had been visited only sporadically by scientists. Then in the late 1970's, Dan
Gibson of the University of Alaska Museum did the first intensive studies of spring and
fall migration in the Near Islands, on Shemya Island. And beginning in the late 1970's, we
began annual spring visits to Attu Island that have continued to this day. We now have a
much more complete picture of bird distribution in the Aleutians.

Alaska's Capital
Inn Bed and Breakfast
City: Juneau
Tel: +1 907 586 6507
In 1906, gold rush pioneer John Olds built one of the grandest homes in all of Juneau,
high on the hillside, overlooking the bustling waterfront. Painstakingly restored to its
original grandeur, today's Alaska's Capital Inn Bed and Breakfast blends turn of the
century elegance with contemporary comfort. The Inn is also home to your hosts Linda and
Mark. Having lived, fished, and paddled around in Southeast Alaska for more than half of
their lives, they are an excellent resource and are happy to share their local knowledge!
Your stay with us will be a true bed and breakfast experience. The aroma of fresh roasted
coffee announces breakfast, a multi-course affair, served in the formal dining room amidst
rays of the morning sun. The menu may include sauteed apples in a hot cinnamon sauce or
fresh local raspberries and cream. From the bedside diaries, guest's favorite entrees are
the dungeness crab eggs benedict on home baked rolls, or the lemon souffle hotcakes and
thick cut smoked ham. Linger and enjoy the coffee and conversation in a unrushed
atmosphere.
