Thousands jammed the streets to cheer drivers and teams for the ceremonial start of the
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. It's called "The Last Great Race" and, around
Alaska, interest in the Iditarod dwarfs the Super Bowl or any other event. Throughout
Alaska, the events leading up to the race dominate the media, continuing for days until
the finish. My wife Mary and I were sampling the winter activities around Anchorage, and
we quickly got caught up in the electric mood of the start of Alaska's most famous
sporting event. At the ceremonial start many viewers carried newspapers that featured
photos and biographies of each entrant. Strolling vendors offered pins, hats, posters and
other race souvenirs, while others sold cooked reindeer sausage, beverages and other
temptations.Local favorites like Jeff King, Dee Dee Jonrowe and Martin Buser loped their
sled dog teams through the sprawling block party to boisterous cheers and whoops.

all the lakes, rivers and bays on the South end of Kodiak Island where our operation is
located and feel that I know this area better than anyone else. I also hold a Coast Guard

We are an Alaska fly in fishing lodge offering fly fishing and spin fishing in remote
alaska for salmon and rainbow trout. We concentrate our efforts on rainbow trout, king
salmon (chinook), and silver salmon (coho). We fly fish and spin fish, and specialize in
"sight fishing" for Alaska king salmon and for "surface fishing" for
silver salmon. We are also the only lodge in the world to catch "king salmon on the
surface using dry flies." We offer remote and private Alaska fishing in an area with
many different rivers, streams, and creeks. We fish smaller rivers and streams, which are
usually shallow enough to wade, and have clear water. Unlike other areas of Alaska, we do
not fish large rivers using big water fishing techniques such as trolling, backtrolling,
or drift fishing. We feel that being confined to a boat for hours backtrolling is not the
Alaska experience that our Guests are looking for, so if you would like to fish smaller
waters that run clear, where you spend the majority of your time sight fishing, then give
us a call.We are a medium sized lodge that, over the course of the summer, average about
10 Guests at a time and this ensures that we are able to provide personal and individual
attention to each Guest. We work daily with each of our Guests to determine where and
which species they would like to fish for the following day. This personal attention
assures the Guest of a customized fishing experience.

Whalers' Cove Lodge
City: Angoon

Whalers' Cove Lodge is located on Killisnoo Island just minutes from the Village of Angoon
on the western side of Admiralty Island. The history of our lodge site has always been
noted for exceptional fishing. Our fishing grounds were originally discovered by the
Tlingit Indians when they traveled from Canada to what is now called Southeast Alaska and
constructed their first village only minutes from our lodge. Once they had time to venture
through the region, they discovered and built another village site where our lodge is
currently located. The Tlingits chose Killisnoo Island due to the exceptional weather,
calm waters of Chatham Strait and the superb fishing on the saltwater as well as the
freshwater. In 1886, Alaska Northwest Trading Company was built within the Tlingit Village
on Killisnoo Island. The site again was chosen due to the prosperous fishery and the calm
inside passage of Chatham Strait. The Trading Company, which was later renamed Alaska Fish
Oil and Guano, was a trading stop for the whaling fleet that operated in the Bering Sea.
Alaska Fish Oil and Guano began rendering oil from herring (our bait fish) and salmon
which were locally caught and used in foods, medicine and for lubricants. The Guano, which
was ground herring, was sold as fertilizer and was mainly used in Hawaii for their
pineapple and sugar cane crops. The owner of Whalers' Cove Lodge had received a vessel's
log book from the late 1800's which states that the crew of this schooner fished in the
exact spot for halibut as we do today. It also mentions about the wealth of herring found
around the area which still holds true today and supports our immense resource of all five
Pacific Northwest Salmon (King, Coho, Sockeye, Chum and Pink), Halibut and over twenty
species of Rockfish including Ling Cod and Red Snappers.
