Travel 2 Alabama
Alabama's diverse landscape serves to
illustrate the variety of adventures awaiting you in Alabama Wonder Full. From the
picturesque mountains of North Alabama to the sugarwhite beaches of the Gulf Coast,
you'll find something special to pique your interest.
With majestic mountains, clear blue
streams and abundant natural wildlife, Alabama is also the perfect place to enjoy the
outdoors. The Alabama Bass Trail is a must for any avid angler. In addition, Alabama is
one of the premier states in the nation for hunting white-tailed deer and Eastern wild
turkey. Our state's generous hunting seasons and bag limits are the envy of other states.
Alabama has warmth and sunshine for the
greater part of the year. Spring arrives early, with the weather warming to the 60s
Fahrenheit daily by March. Summer days average in the low 80s, with periods of 90 and
above. Sweaters or jackets will usually keep off the chill through November. Prolonged
spells of severely cold weather are not frequent during the winter. Snow is a rarity
except in higher altitudes of north Alabama. Average seasonal temperatures for the state's
major cities follow.
Golf vacations to this state have been
rated among the best in the country and even among the best in the world by Golf Digest.
The famous Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is the backbone of golf tourism in Alabama and it
welcomes two new sites to its stellar lineup in 2004.
Perhaps our white sand beaches and
sparkling emerald water are just the setting you need for that perfect vacation with
friends and family.
Alabama can also take you back in
time, back when Montgomery was the first capital of the Confederacy. The National Trust
Civil War Trail links battlefields, landmarks, and museums throughout the state.
Interpretive walking and driving tours in Decatur and other locations help bring history
to life. More recent history is also recognized throughout the state in landmarks and
museums recognizing progress and momentous occasions of the Civil Rights movement.

Alabama Gulf coast

Need a break from the city lights,
mega-malls and suburban sprawl? Get in touch with your wild side on Alabama's Gulf Coast,
where schedules take a back seat to sunsets, to-do-lists aren't nearly as important as
tide charts and each change of season brings something awe-inspiring.
Fall brings a migration of monarch butterflies and a burst of vibrantly hued wildflowers.
Winter sunsets paint the sky with strokes of oranges, pinks and blues. Not far behind, the
moon reflects the luminous glow. Spring comes early, awash in azaleas and the heady sweet
fragrance of magnolias and gardenias straight out of your best dreams of the Deep South.
And of course, summer brings a flush of fiery tropical blooms, endless blue skies and your
own special place in the sun.
All these seasons of splendor provide a
myriad of opportunities for outdoor exploration and adventure: Sailing, kayaking, biking,
hiking, shelling, swimming or simply watching.
A must for hikers is the 6,500-acre Bon
Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Walking trails, fishing and the coastal flora and fauna
turn this trek into a treat from the trailhead with its stately oaks, to the lagoon and
through the dunes to the Gulf of Mexico.
Ride your bike, take a hike, catch a
fish, take a swim, camp out, play golf, or have a picnic. Best yet, take a stroll on 2.5
miles of preserved beach areas The 6,150-acre Gulf State Park has all these options.
Unheard of you say? Wait, there's more. The 900-acre Lake Shelby is the closest body of
freshwater to a body of saltwater in the world. Talk about diversity!
Get even closer to nature on a dolphin
cruise, an afternoon of sailing or bird watching.
Is there really that much difference
between one beach vacation spot and another? What makes Alabama's Gulf Coast anything
special?
Aside from the fact that we have 32 miles
of the softest, whitest sand you've ever seen - so soft, in fact, that it squeaks under
your feet - and clear, turquoise water that comes to shore in gentle waves, you'll find a
spirit that is uniquely Alabamian. What really sets us apart is our special blend of beach
town simplicity and old-fashioned Southern charm-- not to mention a sense of community
even visitors feel. Things move pretty slowly around here. Expect to have a conversation
with the checkout clerk at the grocery store. Don't be surprised if the server asks where
your mama's family is from. Wherever you go, you're greeted by a charming "Hey
(that's "ha-ay") y'all" and reminders beckoning you to slow down to enjoy
the simple pleasures and the people around you.
That's not to say that we can't keep you
entertained. For those who need a little more activity than turning over every 30 minutes
to achieve the perfect tan, Alabama's Gulf Coast offers visitors plenty to do, without
feeling overcrowded or overbuilt. Cool off with the kids on a lightening-fast ride down a
giant waterslide or take a zoo adventure. Putter away the day on one of our ten
championship golf courses where the allure of a perfectly maintained fairway is enhanced
by the diversity of design. Cast your line for deep-sea adventure, with some of the best
captains anywhere to guide you to some of the best fishing anywhere. Step back in time
with a visit to historic Fort Morgan, site of the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay. Or shop
'till you drop at outlet stores, antique malls and quaint beachside boutiques.

Let's not forget about Mother Nature.
Visit with her at the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, the Gulf State Park, or go
birding along the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail.
Festivals are us! There's the Snapper
Festival in February, the Pleasure Island Art Association's festival in March, the October
Fishing Rodeo, the National Shrimp Festival in October, the Frank Brown International
Songwriters' Festival in November. And, there's more than just festivals going on. Our
website calendar of events is updated daily. Check it out on www.gulfshores.com
When all the action makes you hungry,
head to the table. With the world's best fishing hole as our playground, succulent,
fresh-off-the-boat seafood is the order of the day. Sample a different delicacy every day
and come back for seconds. Choose from seaside family hangouts where sandy feet are
welcome, white-linen romantic candlelit dinners for two or downright dives that serve up
some of the finest food and fun to be found.
So what makes us special? It isn't just
the beach, the water, the fishing, the golf, the dining, nature or hospitality. It's all
of these things and the people who enjoy them. It's a place to create happy memories.
