Description
The Hotel BohŠme building was originally built in the 1880's by an early Italian immigrant family named Capurro. It was a typical three-story building with lodging on the upper floors and retail stores on the ground floor. In the hours following the great earthquake of 1906 the San Francisco Fire Department dynamited the building along with the others on the block in order to create a fire break hoping to arrest the progress of raging fires that were moving through the city. Unfortunately, this great sacrifice was not successful and most of North Beach burned. Nonetheless, Capurro did not loose heart after the building's destruction. He hired a crew of Swiss and German carpenters to rebuild the building that is today Hotel BohŠme. Historic records show he spent a total of $2,500.00.More recently, extensive renovations began in 1994 and Hotel BohŠme, as it currently stands, opened in 1995. The BohŠme was specially designed to reflect the culture and taste of late fifties North Beach. The hotel's interiors and design are reminiscent of the bohemian style and flavor the area was famous for during the heyday of the Beat era.The hotel is designed in strong, inviting colors and patterns. In it you will find an eclectic mix of literary and visual motifs drawn directly from the Beat days.Visitors to San Francisco have found it to be a unique, fun and memorable hotel experience unlike any other in the city.
