Description
Sequoyah is celebrated as an illiterate Indian genius who, solely frrom the resources of his mind, endowed a whole tribe with learning; the only man in history to conceive and perfect in its entirety an alphabet or syllabary.Sequoyah was born in the Overhill town of Tuskegee in Tennessee to a Cherokee mother and a German father. As a young warrior he fought beside Sam Houston and Andrew Jackson against the hostile Creek Indians in the battle of Horseshoe Bend in the War of 1812. In the early 1820's he moved from the Overhills to the big Cherokee town of Willstown in northern Alabama, just south of Sequoyah Caverns. It was while living at Willstown that he finished the alphabet on which he had labored for 12 long years. Within a few months almost all the Cherokee Nation could read and write. In honor of this great contribution the giant Sequoia trees and Sequoia National Park in California were named after him.
